Position Description

Job Title:              Field Training Officer (EMT, CCT-EMT, CCT-RN)

Reports To:         Director of Clinical Operations

SUMMARY

The Field Training Officer (EMT, CCT-EMT, CCT-RN), in addition to the normal duties of the EMT, CCT-EMT, or CCT-RN assists in development and training of field personnel. The FTO will have the minimum certifications and licensures and relative experience to their respective discipline. By identifying educational needs, completing quarterly competencies with field personnel, actively participating in the QA/QI process, developing curriculum and initiatives, and guiding new employees through each phase of orientation, the Field Training Officer has an integral role in the overall success of Falcon Critical Care Transports mission.

EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYEE

  • Meets Falcon Critical Care Transport productivity and quality standards
  • Assists in maintaining and monitoring employee educational records
  • Oversees the assigned employees progress through the orientation phases
  • Completes all required QA/QI chart audits within defined timeframe
  • Assists in teaching New Employee Orientation (NEO) as assigned
  • Ensures all staff complete quarterly competencies for their assigned role
  • Assists in the development and implementation of medical protocols and guidelines
  • Acts as a role model with all safety initiatives
  • Adheres to Falcon Critical Care Transport Policy and Procedures
  • Acts as a role model within and outside the work environment

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide emergent, non-emergent, and critical care based on a basic and advanced assessment and the formulation of a general impression, including basic and advanced skills focusing on the acute/chronic management and transportation of the broad range of patients who utilize Falcon Critical Care Transport’s services. This may occur at an emergency scene until transportation resources arrive, from an emergency scene to a health care facility, between health care facilities, or in other healthcare settings.
  • Provides care designed to minimize secondary injury and provide comfort to the patient and family while transporting the patient.
  • Responds to emergency, non-emergent, and intra-hospital medical calls; operates ambulance to respond and transport patients per governing EMS agencies.
  • Assesses or assists in assessing the situation and need for assistance; assists in determining or determines most effective method of emergent, non-emergent, and intra-hospital treatment; applies appropriate level of treatment to patient(s); advises hospital personnel of situation; transport injured or ill to appropriate destination for continuation of treatment.
  • Maintains communication with dispatcher.
  • Prepares and appropriately completes patient care records and any related forms/documentation.
  • In mass casualty situations may assist in directing or coordinating the triage process and/or transportation to appropriate medical facility
  • Maintains rapport with the patient, support agencies and with medical facility personnel.
  • Establishes contact with Medical Control Physician as required to discuss treatment plan(s).Checks, maintains and re-supplies ambulances; identifies needs for additional and/or replacement supplies and equipment; immediately reports any needed maintenance or repairs to appropriate person(s)Cleans ambulances (interior and exterior, as needed), any equipment and/or supplies and crew quarters on a daily basis
  • Adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards Falcon Critical Care Transport and departmental procedures/policies and goals
  • Undertakes continuous medical and departmental education and works with the community, medical professionals, and others to educate and advise of the role, capabilities and responsibilities of an EMT, CCT-EMT, CCT-RN and common medical issues, etc.
  • Acts in the absence of Field Supervisor, as required
  • Assists the Falcon Critical Care Transport in a variety of functions and duties in support of staff education needs, quarterly competencies, QA/QI, orientation, driver education, safety initiatives; identifies, assesses, recommends and provides staff education programs and curriculum that meet requirements and needs of Falcon Critical Care Transport EMT, CCT-EMT, and CCT-RN; investigates, reviews, assesses, and evaluates new education programs to determine applicability for development and implementation; recommends and implements approved education and orientation programs; develops education program parameters; recommends changes to policies and procedures; develops and writes curriculum for new education programs as needed.
  • Assists in development and training of personnel; assists in maintaining and monitoring records and files; identifies staffing, equipment, supplies, materials, and other needs; analyzes and reviews education programs; recommends changes to enhance effectiveness; serves on and works with Quality Assurance committee; promotes program and program activities within the community.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A High School Diploma or equivalent with one year of experience as an EMT, CCT-EMT, or CCT-RN. Must possess the education and experience in areas of emergent, non-emergent, and intra-hospital care that commensurate with the patient care mission; these skills include basic and advanced interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

This position requires effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and intermediate computer literacy utilizing a variety of software applications.

  • Thorough knowledge of applicable State of California, EMS Division statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of the techniques, principles and practices of emergent, non-emergent, and critical care
  • Thorough knowledge hospital locations
  • Skill in driving an emergency vehicle (EMT and CCT-EMT), operation of emergency medical and related equipment
  • Knowledge of emergency communications and procedures
  • Knowledge of record keeping, completion of a patient care record in both written and electronic format
  • Skill in working under stressful situations, in receiving and assessing information, then making appropriate decisions for response
  • Skill in effectively maintaining equipment, facilities and operations
  • Ability to quickly assess and make accurate decisions concerning human life

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Incumbent must possess the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Incumbent must possess the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY

Incumbent must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Incumbent must possess the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Shall be licensed as a EMT or RN in the State of California
  • EMT’s must possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • EMT’s must possess a California Ambulance Drivers License
  • EMT’s must possess a Medical Examiners Certificate
  • FTO’s must continuously maintain valid certifications in CPR (EMT), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (RN), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (RN)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The incumbent frequently is required to use hands; reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb or balance. The incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
